‘We were a family’: An unusual story of friendship in the park
For a family that lived in the bush, it was not easy.
They were not allowed to travel with the children because of quarantine rules.
When they did venture out, it took them on the back of a pickup truck that drove them out to the beach where they would spend two days soaking up the sun and enjoying the sand.
They even made the trip up the coast.
For the past 10 years, the family has been trying to keep up with the quarantine regulations.
In the meantime, the four have been making the most of their time on the road.
“We had the chance to go camping in the summer and we went and did that a lot,” says Hannah.
I was a little nervous but I’m happy to see them, I’ve been happy with them.
Hannah has been visiting Griffith Park on her own since she was a child.
She now works as a park ranger and has two daughters and a son.
“The park has been amazing to me and my family,” she says.
“We have had a wonderful time and have had lots of friends.”
But Griffith Park is not the only place Hannah and her family have visited.
In 2010, she and her husband bought a house in a suburb of Brisbane, about an hour’s drive from the park.
Her eldest daughter has been there ever since, and she has never missed a visit.
On a recent evening, Hannah and a friend went to the park, which has become a favourite for couples looking to escape the bush.
She and her partner were joined by a large group of people.
“I love to go on trips like this,” Hannah says.
A few weeks ago, the group headed to the Brisbane River for a picnic.
They were joined on the drive by two young women.
“It was just really nice to get to see the city,” Hannah explains.
“You don’t get to do that on your own.
It was great to be able to go and have fun with people and have a picnic and have friends.
We had a great time.”
Hanna and her friend were delighted when they spotted a large, colourful water buffalo, which she nicknamed the “baby”.
“It’s just such a cool animal,” Hannah recalls.
“I can’t wait to see it grow into something bigger and bigger.”
A year later, the pair have already seen the baby buffalo in the river, and Hannah’s son was on a boat with a young couple who were enjoying the river.
“We’ve been out here a few times,” Hannah adds.
“My son has seen them too.
I’m really happy that I can be out here and have them come out and see the buffalo.”
The family now has a small herd of buffalo in their backyard.
But while Hannah says the park is her favourite part of Brisbane’s CBD, it is not without its challenges.
As with any large family, she says, there is tension.
There is also some pressure.
“They’ve made it work, but it’s not the same for everybody,” she explains.
But she and the children say that, even with all of the challenges, they are very proud of what they have achieved.
“This has been the greatest experience for us and we love to do this,” she concludes.
“There’s no doubt about it.”
